THE SHORT VERSION

In the STEP 1 trial, Wegovy produced 14.9% average weight loss at 68 weeks, versus 2.4% for placebo. About 86% of participants lost at least 5% of their body weight.

Who lost how much

Weight lost
Share of Wegovy participants who got there
At least 5% of body weight
~86%
At least 10% of body weight
~69%
At least 15% of body weight
~51%
At least 20% of body weight
~33%

These are responder rates from the STEP 1 trial at 68 weeks — the share of participants who reached each weight-loss threshold, not the average. Averages and individual outcomes are different things; a wide range of results is normal.

What to expect, and when

T—01

Weeks 1–4

Starting dose (0.25mg). Appetite changes may be subtle; GI side effects are most common here.

T—02

Weeks 5–16

Dose steps up. Many people start noticing steadier appetite reduction and early weight change.

T—03

Weeks 17–60

At or near the 2.4mg maintenance dose. This is where most of the cumulative weight loss happens in trial data.

T—04

Weeks 60–68

Weight loss tends to level off as the body reaches a new equilibrium at a stable dose.

T—05

Individual variation

Starting weight, diet, activity, sleep, and other medications all affect your personal trajectory.

T—06

Plateaus are normal

A leveling-off doesn't mean the medication has stopped working — it's the expected pattern in trial data too.

How this compares to other trials

Trial
Average weight loss
STEP 1 — Wegovy injection, 68 weeks
14.9%
OASIS-4 — Wegovy pill, 64 weeks
16.6%
SURMOUNT-5 — Wegovy injection, 72 weeks (head-to-head vs. Zepbound)
13.7%

These are separate trials with different designs, timepoints, and participant groups, so the numbers aren't directly interchangeable — but they consistently land in a similar range for Wegovy.

Q & A

How much weight will I lose on Wegovy?Q—01 +
In the STEP 1 trial, average weight loss was 14.9% of body weight at 68 weeks, versus 2.4% for placebo. Individual results vary widely — some people lose more, some less.
When do Wegovy results plateau?Q—02 +
Weight loss in the STEP 1 trial continued through roughly week 60, then leveled off through the 68-week endpoint, once participants had been at the 2.4mg maintenance dose for a while.
Does everyone lose weight on Wegovy?Q—03 +
Most do, but not everyone loses the same amount. In STEP 1, about 86% of participants lost at least 5% of body weight, but a smaller share reached the higher thresholds — individual response varies by metabolism, diet, activity, and other factors.
What happens if I stop taking Wegovy?Q—04 +
Weight regain is common after stopping GLP-1 medications, since the underlying appetite and metabolic effects fade once the drug clears your system. This is a reason many prescribers treat obesity as a chronic condition requiring ongoing management.
Is the Wegovy pill's weight loss the same as the injection's?Q—05 +
They're close but come from different trials — the injection's STEP 1 trial showed 14.9% at 68 weeks, while the pill's OASIS-4 trial showed 16.6% at 64 weeks. The trials aren't directly comparable, but results are in a similar range.
