THE SHORT VERSION

Wegovy is a subcutaneous injection — under the skin, not into muscle — given once weekly in the stomach, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate sites each week and always use a fresh, sterile pen.

Per Wegovy (semaglutide) prescribing information and instructions for use, Novo Nordisk. Not medical advice — follow the training your prescriber or pharmacist gives you.

Step by step

Step
What to do
1. Prep
Wash hands; check the pen isn't expired, cloudy, or discolored
2. Choose a site
Stomach (2+ inches from navel), thigh, or upper arm
3. Clean the skin
Wipe with an alcohol swab and let it air dry
4. Inject
Place the pen flat on skin, press firmly until you hear/feel the click
5. Hold
Keep the pen in place for the count specified in your pen's instructions
6. Dispose
Drop the used pen straight into a sharps container

Exact timing and pen mechanics vary slightly by pen type — always follow the instructions for use that come with your specific prescription, and ask your pharmacist to walk through it the first time.

Rotating sites

R—01

Three approved sites

Stomach (abdomen), front of the thigh, or back of the upper arm.

R—02

Rotate weekly

Use a different spot — or a different site entirely — each week to prevent buildup and irritation.

R—03

Avoid the navel zone

Stay at least 2 inches away from your belly button if injecting in the stomach.

R—04

Skip damaged skin

Avoid moles, scars, stretch marks, bruises, or areas that are tender, red, or hard.

R—05

Track your rotation

A simple log or app makes it easy to remember where you injected last.

R—06

Consistent isn't required

You don't have to use the same site type every week — variety is the point.

Q & A

Can I inject Wegovy through clothing?Q—01 +
No. Inject directly into clean, bare skin — not through clothing.
What if I see an air bubble in the pen?Q—02 +
Small air bubbles are normal and won't harm you if injected. Wegovy pens are prefilled and designed to deliver the correct dose regardless of small bubbles.
What if I bleed a little after injecting?Q—03 +
A small amount of bleeding or bruising at the injection site is normal. Apply gentle pressure with a clean cotton ball or gauze if needed.
How do I dispose of used Wegovy pens?Q—04 +
Used pens and needles go in an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container — never in household trash or recycling. Check local guidelines for drop-off locations if you don't have a sharps container.
Can someone else give me the injection?Q—05 +
Yes, a caregiver, partner, or friend can give the injection following the same steps, as long as they've been shown the proper technique.
